Ever have one of those day where it seems like everything inside your head is a swirl of thoughts moving around at a million miles an hour... and yet you can't actually *catch* any of those thoughts and make something constructive and tangible out of it?  Had one of those days today... seemed like I had *(among other things)* about a dozen different ideas for worthy blog posts, and yet found myself completely unable to write so much as a single coherent sentence. Frustrating, to say the least! So, after a while of getting nowhere at all, I opted for just checking out of doing anything particularly productive *(that involved the computer)* and heading outside to do some yardwork. Thankfully, the promised rainy day for today did *not* materialize. I find that when my thoughts are in *"overdrive mode,"* the best thing I can do for myself is to *"break state"* and preferably start working on something physical... like gardening.  This time of the year, there's no shortage of work to be done in our yard. Aside from just the general upkeep work on our kitchen garden, lawn mowing is an almost constant chore so I took on just a small corner of our fairly extensive lawn... at least things look nice from the *street* now! Mostly, the mowing was also to prepare the ground under one of our larger trees, which was in desperate need of some trimming. That's the thing about fast growing trees you put in to quickly fill a gap in the landscape: they *continue* to be fast growing, even after they have reached the size you needed, in the first place! So, our **[Princess Tree](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znNXFfhz71M)** got a serious haircut.  *Blooms on the Princess Tree* It's a very beautiful tree, particularly in late spring when it is *covered* with large lilac blossoms. But it's also quite *messy,* and it's a very fast-growing and invasive species. The wood is weak and brittle, and much of the time half the smaller twigs are actually dead and being replaced annually with new twigs. Doing the trimming today reminded me a lot of trimming Chinaberry trees when I lived in Texas... Chinaberry is generally regarded as a *"trash tree."* Once I got done with my tree trimming, I moved on to one of our larger ongoing projects: converting the sideyard expanse of lawn into grow spaces.  As I have mentioned before, I have never been much of a fan of lawns... I'd rather grow food. And this is a totally *useless* piece of lawn that's on the side of the house where we seldom go, yet is it also the part of our property that gets the *most sun* so it only makes sense to turn the expanse of grass into raised beds where we grow the food plants that require the most *sun.* The only challenge is going to be to keep the local herd of deer out of there. Potatoes are a good bet, since deer rarely will eat nightshade greens... and peppers are a good bet because they need sun and are... well... *peppers.* We might also put onions and garlic back there; stuff in the onion family seems to be somewhat deer resistant. If that all fails, then we'll have to bring in the deer fence. I'd rather *not,* but we may have no choice.  Anyway, at the end of it all, my racing thoughts had pretty much faded into the background, and even though this might not be a super *creative* post, at least I was able to sit down and write for a while!
