He was a smart guy, *Aristotle* I mean, and had a nice way with words; if given the opportunity to meet someone from the past for an hour this chap would be on the list for sure although what he'd make of a knucklehead like me is anyone's guess. Still, I believe it would be an hour well spent and I'd come away with some new thoughts and attitudes to carry forward I presume.

I was in a situation recently that caused me to question a human being's actions, something I'll not delve into in this post, however it left me wondering what brings a person to act as they do, how they can twist the truth to suit their own purposes but actually working in counter-productive ways in respect of themselves.

> I'm no expert however I believe it comes from a place firmly rooted in ego and hubris, selfishness, entitlement and probably lack of self-esteem as well.

I don't know why people feel those things however I know they are often non-productive to the individual and those around them, self-limiting and somewhat destructive. I also believe that the potential for it can be mitigated, or even eliminated, by way of some honest self-reflection...but that takes courage as Aristotle says above.

Human beings are remarkable creatures with the ability to do incredibly difficult things; Think about some of the achievements humankind have made; think about your own as well. Now think about the terrible things humankind have brought to pass, collectively and as individuals...and think of yourself in this regard also; have you always been your best self or have there been times you've not been? (Hint: No, you've not always been your best self and neither have I - No one has.)

> Based on the events in respect of the person I mention above I've judged the individual poorly and will carry that forward. I've judged myself in that way also; as I said, I've not always been my best version to my everlasting shame.

But here's the thing...just as we have a window looking outward to the world and people around us, we have a window that allows us to look within and, if done often and with honesty, there's many answers there...answers that will help us proceed in life and work towards being better versions of ourselves. Of course, we need to apply honesty, plan and strategize and then do the hard work to carry us forward - I say *hard work*, because that's exactly what it takes - but if we choose to do it, have the courage to do it, the results will come...a better life.

As I said, I'm no expert and am a long, *long* way from being someone I'd call smart...but I don't need to be to look inwardly, seek the truth and answers that will help me proceed in life.

Something I've always managed to do is be a sponge, to listen to others, contemplate what I hear and discard or apply it or the lessons and thoughts it prompts to my life with the intention of finding better results. To that end, I'd like to put it to you and see what your thoughts on self-reflection are. How do you do it, why and how do you maintain self-honesty? Have you had situations in which you haven't been your best version and if so what did you do, why and what did you learn, if anything? Feel free to comment below if you are so inclined, I'd like to hear from you.
